Makua

Ea Hānau Cultural Council represents kūpuna (elders) and mākua (parent-age practitioners) throughout Ka Pae ʻĀina o Hawaiʻi.  Both Kupuna and Makua are knowledgeable in Kanaka birth traditions and practices.  Kupuna are the decision-makers on the Ea Hānau council, and makua inform, coordinate, advise and follow orders.

OʻAHU: Laulani Teale, MPH

Laulani  Teale is a  mother, peace worker, birth worker, health worker,  musician, artist and activist from Kahaluʻu, Oʻahu.   She has been active in the hānau community since the birth of her first child in 1993, and has helped many others in revitalizing her hānau traditions   She has had many great, close teachers and mentors in her health & birth traditional knowledge & decolonization work, including Papa Henry Auwae, Kamakahukilani Von Oelhoffen, Medrakanoeonapua, and Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell, in addition to her own tutu, who was born in Kahana Valley and told stories that helped rekindle family  traditions. She is the Coordinator of Hoʻopae Pono Peace Project, which supports the Council with logistics, documentation and more.

MAUI: Kiʻi Kahoʻohanohano

Kiʻi Kahoʻohanohano is a rural Maui mother and Pale Keiki (midwife) who has served communities all over Maui and beyond for nearly two decades, while bringing many of her own  children into the world, some of whom are themselves already learning to assist hānau. She serves on the Hawaii Commission for the Status of Women and represents Hawaiʻi internationally amongst Indigenous birthkeepers. Kiʻi is also a traditional lomilomi practitioner and carries the tradition of many great Maui kupuna.  She has trained and inspired a new generation of Pale Keiki  in hānau traditions, and has many strong young Kanaka students currently  training under her to serve their communities, including remote areas.  

MOLOKAI:  Ritte ʻOhana

The Ritte ʻŌhana includes at least four generations carrying on the practices of their ancestors, including cultural & land protection, hānau and much more.   

HAWAIʻI: Poco Compehos

Poco Comehos is a homebirth father, Kaʻū farmer and kakoʻo (cultural assistant) to many kupuna, who has worked with the traditional hānau community for over 20 years.  Poco also serves the healers in West Maui fire relief efforts as part of the Maui Medic Healers Hui.

 


Kauai: Lorilani Keohokalole


Lorilani is a birth worker, herbalist and all around healer from Anahola, Kauaʻi.  She serves the Mauna Medic Healers Hui on Mauna Kea in 2019, and works in many cultural efforts on Kauaʻi.
